Intrinsic Motivation Experiment

This experiment tries to answer the question of whether gamification / game design techniques can be applied without harming intrinsic motivation. See exercism/discussions#123.

Review Quantity

Question: Do our gamification features significantly increase participation?

Result: Participation average increased during the gamification period from 1.2 comments per participating user to 2.0 comments, with significance of p=0.0757 (not quite significant).

Question: Does withdrawal decrease participation below pre-gamaification levels?

Result: Participation did not decrease. In fact, the average exceeded the control group slightly during the withdrawal period, from 1.6 to 1.9 (not significant).

Review Length

Question: Do reviews get shorter during gamification?

Result: No significant change.
